FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – BECOMING A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

WHY ARE THERE TWO COMPANIES – DITA AND SYSTEM DRIVING SCHOOL?

DITA provides all the training by our ORDIT instructor trainers to those wishing to become a driving instructor. This includes the 50 hours course, extended training towards the DVSA (Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency) trainee license, Standard Check Workshops, and any other instructor training required

System Driving School provides the day-to-day running of the driving school and provides the franchise for the qualified ADI’s and those instructors on DVSA Trainee licenses and books & manages lessons between these instructors and everyday pupils

WILL I TRAIN IN MY LOCAL AREA?

Your theory study will be from your own home. Otherwise, we plan to meet you at our office in Rayleigh and the training for both Part 2 and 3 will take place from there. In special circumstances, it can be arranged to take place in a mutually convenient location

WILL TRAINING FIT AROUND MY WORK AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS?

We always work the training sessions around your personal / work commitments. Just bear in mind the DVSA tests are generally held during weekdays, and we cannot determine when these will be.

CAN I TRAIN ON A SATURDAY

Subject to availability yes, we can arrange your training to take place on a Saturday

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL ANY OF THE THREE TESTS?

We will support you and if you need any additional training, this can be arranged via your instructor trainer / the support team at Mapline House, Rayleigh

The part one tets can be taken as many times as you need (except in Nothern Ireland)

You only have 3 attempts at each part two and three tests (DVSA tets fees apply). If you are unlucky enough not to pass at the third attempt, as per the DVSA regulations, you will have to wait two years from the date you originally passed the part one test before you are allowed to re-sit any of the DVSA examinations.

WHAT SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE TO ME ONCE I’VE QUALIFIED?

System Driving School will offer you our franchise package, where we will continue supporting you throughout your career with us providing you with arguably better-quality support than the nationals and the independents, at a fraction of the cost. We are rated Number One driving School in the UK on Trustpilot. You could be part of this amazing team.

Our instructors throughout Essex & Havering only pay £75 per week, reduced to £60 for our trainees (t&cs apply) * and receive all these benefits within their franchise:

  •          Online Diary, Business Cards, Email, Uniform & Car Signs
  •          Switch to us and save money, with no pupil supply fees.
  •          Public & Private Liability insurance discounted.
  •          Local one2one business support, meetings, and CPD.
  •          Free access to Theory Test Pro for your pupils.
  •          Local advertising
  •          Online login to secure instructors’ documents and records.

DO I HAVE TO START WORK AS SOON AS I QUALIFY?

You can start when it suits you. Usually, our trainees take on a Pink DVSA Trainee licence to practice their way to the part 3 test. And usually, when the trainee passes the part 3 test, they either continue with the lessons / hours they are already doing or go full time. The option is always yours

DO DRIVING INSTRUCTORS WHO WORK FULL TIME (OVER 40 HOURS PER WEEK) SEE 40 PUPILS PER WEEK?

We encourage our instructors to do 2-hour lessons. This means the pupil gets better value for their money, and you as an instructor would only have 20 pupils (so 4 pupils a day) to go between, rather than 40 pupils (8 lessons per day and this would be very hard to achieve too) and therefore more cost savings on fuel.

ARE THE TEST FEES INCLUDED IN THE TRAINING?

The cost of the three DVSA tests are not included in our training packages:

  • Part 1 – Theory Test – £83.00
  • Part 2 – Driving Ability Test – £111.00
  • Part 3 – ADI Test – £111.00

Also, the licence applications (Trainee and Full ADI) are not included in the training package:

  • Trainee Licence = £140.00
  • Full Adi Licence = £300.00 (Once fully qualified)

WHAT IS THE PASS RATE FOR INSTRUCTOR TRAINING WITH DITA / SYSTEM DRIVING SCHOOL?

We are very proud of our 99% pass rate for our instructors completing all three parts of our training program.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?

It is difficult to give an exact answer because of the following factors:

  •  Application for a DBS – can take anything between 2 weeks – 2months.
  • Part 1 Theory Test – how soon the tests are available to book?
  • Part 2 Driving Ability Test – cannot be booked until you have passed the Part 1 test and how soon the tests are available to book
  • Completing the course towards the 40 hours required to apply for a DVSA Trainee Licence – this would depend on you passing the part 2 test

Taking all of the above in mind, and with successful passes and test availability, it is possible to complete our 50-hour course and be on the road within 4 – 8 months.

IS THERE STILL A DEMAND FOR DRIVING INSTRUCTORS?

The demand is always there. Looking at just one college that we at System Driving School have an exclusive contract with, they have 5,000+ students in their 5 campuses, looking for driving lessons.

HOW MANY PUPILS CAN I EXPECT SYSTEM DRIVING SCHOOL TO SUPPLY?

Our goal to our instructor team is to make sure your diaries are full and although there is no 100% guarantee, we pride ourselves in making sure you are always busy. As stated before, we have contracts with many schools and colleges throughout Essex and Havering, giving exclusive advertising to your prime market of pupils. Most full-time instructors have 20 pupils per week (4 x 2-hour lessons Monday to Friday)

WILL I BE EMPLOYED BY SYSTEM DRIVING SCHOOL?

No. Nearly all driving instructors in the UK are self-employed.

As a driving instructor you are your own boss – you decide your own hours and how you wish to organise your diary to balance your work/life commitments. Many of our instructors will tell you the flexible working hours are a real bonus to the job and are not something you will experience in many other roles. As with any self-employed career, you will need to remember that you get out what you put in – the more hours you work and the more flexible you can be, the more money you will earn.

WHAT LEVEL OF TRAINING AND SUPPORT WILL I RECEIVE?

We are very proud that we only use our very own ORDIT trained Driving instructor Trainers, giving our trainees the best possible tuition out there. We try to do most of the 50-hour course in car. If you are currently training with DITA and have any queries about your course, please email pdi@thedita.co.uk

Our admin team are also on hand to help you with any queries you may have, and can be contacted at pdi@thedita.co.uk

ARE THE TESTS DIFFICULT TO PASS?

The DVSA sets the tests you need to take to become a driving instructor. The DVSA does make these tests challenging in order to ensure those who pass are fully prepared to take on the responsibility of teaching the next generation of drivers to be safe on the road for life. As one of Essex’s largest driving instructor training schools, with excellent pass rates, DITA / System Driving School is proud to produce some of the finest instructors in the around.

As with any adult learning course, becoming a driving instructor requires hard work and commitment. But, with determination and drive, and the support and expertise from DITA, there is no reason why you cannot pass the tests and begin your career as a driving instructor.

HOW MANY HOURS DO I HAVE TO WORK AS A SYSTEM DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?

You can work the hours you choose. For example, you may want to work part-time to spend more time with your family or work around other commitments.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO DELAY MY TRAINING?

We understand that sometimes trainee instructors may need to delay their training due to reasons beyond their control. Delaying training once started, can cause the following issues:

You must pass the final part 3 test within the 2 years from the date you passed the Part 1 Theory Test. If you do not, the DVSA will revoke and require you to start the process again.

In order to apply for a DVSA trainee licence, their rule is that the 40 hours training towards this licence must be completed within a 6-month period.

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO I NEED TO BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?

The DVSA require that anyone wishing to train as a driving instructor has no more than six penalty points on their licence, has held a valid full UK licence for at least three years, be at least 21 years old and meet all legal, physical and medical requirements.

DO I PAY ANY FEES FOR PUPIL INTRODUCTION

Unlike many other schools, we do not charge any pupil introduction fees or payment fees to the trainees or instructors.

HOW MUCH CAN A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR EARN?

Depending on the hours you choose to do. For example, over 48 weeks:

  • 20 pupils per week – sales = £1120.00 per week = £58,240 per annum
  • 15 pupils per week – sales =   £795.00 per week = £41,340 per annum

All above figures are based on £34 per hour as of Jan 2025 and are subject to change.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I NEED TO CANCEL A TRAINING SESSION?

Trainees are required to give 48 Hours’ notice of their inability to attend a booked training session. In the event that you do not attend a booked training session and you fail to give the required notice, DITA reserves the right to charge for the missed session.

HOW MANY HOURS OF TRAINING WILL DITA / SYSTEM DRIVING SCHOOL PROVIDE?

Our basic instructor training program provides 50 hours. There are opportunities to top up with extra sessions if you wish too. The DVSA Pink Trainee licence requires the trainee to do a mandatory 20 extra hours of training that must be done within the first 3 months of the start of the DVSA trainee licence date.

WILL DITA / SYSTEM DRIVING SCHOOL PROVIDE ME A training car with MY FRANCHISE?

We do not supply cars with the franchise. We do insist that the training cars are no older than 4 years old. You can use your own vehicle, depending on model and age. We can recommend you to some leasing or dealerships that many of our instructors regularly use.
