DVSA trialling changes to the driving test

From 6 May 2025, the DVSA will begin trialling an increase in the amount of time pupils spend on higher-speed roads, including rural routes, during their driving test.

We understand that rural roads are among the most hazardous high-speed routes for new drivers. Current statistics show that 48% of casualties in collisions involving young car drivers happen on rural roads, compared to 42% for drivers of other age groups.

The aim of this trial is to more accurately reflect the challenging conditions new drivers will encounter once they’ve passed their test, and to support efforts to improve road safety.
