Research reveals that 20mph speed limits help save lives
New TfL research indicates that the number of people killed or seriously injured on London’s borough roads fell by 34% between 1989 and 2013 after the introduction of the 20mph speed limit.
The report highlights that 20mph schemes have led to a significant drop in deaths and serious injuries, including:
- A 40% decrease in fatalities (from 15 to 9), compared to a background trend of just a 7% reduction in deaths across borough roads.
- A 34% drop in the number of people killed or seriously injured (from 395 to 260), versus a 15% reduction across borough roads more broadly.
- A 75% reduction in child fatalities (from 4 to 1), with no change observed in the control group. Additionally, children’s casualties fell by 50% (from 517 to 280), compared to a 20% decrease within the control group.

A 35% reduction in collisions and a 36% fall in overall casualties on borough roads, set against a background trend of a 12% decrease across all borough roads.
