A multi-agency investigation uncovered the alarming condition of part-worn tyres sold to the public, with none meeting the UK’s legal standards for sale.

An operation led by Lancashire County Council Trading Standards, TyreSafe, and Lancashire Constabulary focused on three Preston garages selling part-worn tyres.

Inspectors examined 30 tyres, and none met the requirements set out in the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994.

Under these regulations, all part-worn tyres must:

  • Be free from dangerous cuts, bulges, or exposed cords
  • Pass an inflation test at their maximum operating pressure
  • Have a tread depth of at least 2mm
  • Be clearly labelled “PART-WORN” in lettering at least 4mm high
  • Be properly puncture repaired according to the current British Standard
