Cycling UK Calls for Renewed Highway Code Awareness Campaign
Four years after major changes to the Highway Code were introduced to improve safety for people walking and cycling, Cycling UK is urging the Government to launch a new public awareness campaign to ensure road users understand and follow the updated rules.
The revised Highway Code came into force on 29 January 2022 and was designed to better protect vulnerable road users.
Among the key changes were the introduction of a hierarchy of road users, placing greater responsibility on drivers of larger vehicles to look out for those more at risk. The update also strengthened guidance on safely overtaking cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians.
Other measures included promoting the “Dutch Reach” technique to help prevent car-dooring incidents and clarifying priorities at junctions to improve safety for people walking and cycling.
An initial awareness campaign by THINK! — The government’s road safety communications programme was welcomed as an important first step in highlighting the changes.
However, Cycling UK believes more action is needed. The charity says many road users are still unaware of the updated rules and that further public education is essential to tackle long-standing driving habits and improve safety on the roads.
