Is an EV right for you?

Will an EV work for you

An EV can be a fantastic choice—but it depends on your charging access, driving habits and expectations. Get those right, and you’ll enjoy lower running costs, a smoother drive and a quieter journey.

The first thing to consider is how and where you’ll charge.

If you can install a home charger—typically on a driveway—you’re in the best position. Charging overnight on cheaper electricity can cost as little as 2–5p per mile, and you’ll wake up each morning with a full battery.

If you park on the street, things can be trickier. Some towns offer public charging points nearby, including those built into lampposts. However, these can be more expensive—sometimes costing close to petrol prices per mile. So while you’ll still benefit from a quieter, smoother and greener drive, the cost savings may be limited.

EVs may also not suit everyone’s driving habits. If you regularly drive 500+ miles non-stop, they can be less practical. That said, for most drivers, charging breaks tend to line up naturally with rest stops, meaning long journeys often don’t take much longer than in a petrol or diesel car.

If you tow a caravan or trailer, be cautious—this can significantly reduce range, and charging en route may require unhitching
