Police data reveals extreme speeding on 20mph and 30mph roads
New analysis from the RAC has revealed the shocking extent of excessive speeding on lower-speed roads, with seven in 10 UK police forces recording motorists travelling at more than twice the speed limit on 30mph roads over the past year.
Data obtained through Freedom of Information requests uncovered a number of alarming cases. Among the worst offenders was a driver caught travelling at 89mph in a 20mph zone in Deeside, North Wales, while another was clocked at 114mph in a 30mph limit near a primary school in Leicestershire. Police also recorded several motorists exceeding 60mph in 20mph zones and speeds of up to 111mph on 30mph roads.
The figures also show that speeding on lower-limit roads remains widespread. Across 33 police force areas, more than 271,000 drivers were caught travelling at 40mph or faster in 30mph zones. Meanwhile, 28 police forces recorded more than 32,500 motorists exceeding 30mph in 20mph limits.
The RAC says the findings underline the continuing problem of dangerous speeding, particularly on roads where pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users are most at risk.
