Can smartwatches be used behind the wheel
More than one in three motorists who use a smartwatch while driving could be unknowingly breaking the law, according to new research from the RAC.
While it’s illegal to touch a handheld mobile phone when driving, the rules around smartwatches remain unclear. Even something as simple as dismissing a notification could potentially lead to a £200 fine and six penalty points.
The survey found that 34% of drivers admit to using a smartwatch at the wheel, with checking the time, viewing notifications, using navigation and making calls among the most common activities.
The RAC is urging for clearer guidance so drivers know exactly what is – and isn’t – allowed when using smartwatches on the road.
