School run sparks idling warning
As the new school year begins, parents are being reminded that leaving their car engines running unnecessarily while parked is a criminal offence — and could result in fines of up to £80 in some areas.
Car insurance comparison site Tiger.co.uk is urging drivers to switch off their engines during school drop-offs and pick-ups to cut down on air and noise pollution.
Under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act, idling is illegal on public roads, and offenders can be issued a £20 fine, which doubles if unpaid within 28 days. In parts of London, penalties are even steeper.
With children returning to school, Tiger.co.uk is highlighting the health risks of vehicle emissions, especially for young lungs.
Ian Wilson, managing director at Tiger.co.uk, said: “Many parents don’t realise the harm caused by idling engines. Kids breathe faster than adults, so they inhale more pollutants. If walking or cycling isn’t an option, simply turning off the engine while waiting can make a big difference.”
