Lewis Moghul, aged 22, was discovered to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit by over three times when he crashed his red BMW 225D MSport, resulting in his own death and that of his 19-year-old passenger, Sammy Phillips.

According to one witness, the car was traveling at “reckless” speeds before veering off the road and colliding with trees in Oxfordshire in February of the previous year.

Based on a recent analysis by the BBC, young men are found to be four times as prone as other drivers to be convicted of dangerous or careless driving.

During a discussion featured in the BBC documentary Drive Fast Die Young, he conveyed to Sammy’s brother Jamie: “People must understand that there’s no turning back, mate. One wrong move, and it’s over.”

Chief Constable Jo Shiner, the UK’s leading roads policing officer, attributed the DVLA statistics to a blend of “inexperience, overconfidence,” and men often feeling the need to show off.

Road safety experts are urging the government to strengthen penalties and reconsider the implementation of graduated driving licenses.

The statistics

According to DLVA data provided to the BBC following Freedom of Information requests, 4912 males aged 17 to 24 were convicted of dangerous or careless driving offences in 2023, resulting in endorsement codes on their licenses

In comparison, the number of convictions for females in the same age bracket was 549.

Additionally, 3625 young males faced penalties for drug-driving, while 4424 were penalized for drink-driving.

The corresponding figures for females were 301 and 942, respectively.
