New Road Safety Strategy promises to ‘save thousands of lives’

The Government has unveiled its first Road Safety Strategy in more than ten years, setting out plans to cut deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035. Announced today (Wednesday 7 January), ministers say the strategy could save thousands of lives by cracking down on drink driving, improving training for young drivers, and introducing compulsory eye tests for older motorists. The plan also sets an ambitious target to reduce road deaths and serious injuries among children under 16 by 70%. Around four people are killed on Britain’s roads every day, with many thousands more seriously injured each year. However, the Government says targeted measures tackling speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seat belts, and mobile phone use could prevent many of these tragedies. As part of the strategy, the Government will also consult on lowering the drink-drive limit in England and Wales, which has not changed since 1967 and remains the highest in Europe. |
