Spotlight on Young Driver Safety

Young drivers remain one of the most at-risk groups on UK roads — and now, road safety partners across the country are coming together for Operation Spotlight, a two-week national campaign running from 22 September to 5 October.

Spearheaded by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), the campaign shines a light on the alarming statistics: nearly 5,000 people were killed or seriously injured in 2023 in crashes involving at least one young driver.

From high-profile patrols to impactful school presentations, forces like West Yorkshire Police are combining education with enforcement to reduce these numbers. Parents and guardians are also being urged to lead by example and help shape safer driving habits in young people.

To support these efforts, a new central resource — the Protect Young Drivers website — has been launched, offering key research, stories, and tools to help anyone involved in road safety.
