Happy Birthday A127!

The A127 has just turned 100 years old!

On March 25, 2025, the A127, also known as the Southend Arterial Road, celebrated its 100th anniversary. Originally envisioned by Prime Minister Lloyd George to employ returning World War I veterans, construction began in 1921. The road officially opened on March 25, 1925, with Prince Henry, later the Duke of Gloucester, inaugurating the route by driving from Wanstead to Southend.

As the first road in the UK designed specifically for motor vehicles, the A127 has significantly contributed to the development and connectivity of South Essex over the past century.
