Record MOT tyre failures prompt urgent calls for tougher regulations
Leaders from policing, government, road safety, and industry are calling for immediate action on tyre safety following new data that shows a record 2.15 million vehicles failed their MOT due to tyre defects over the past year.
Figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reveal that 2,152,849 vehicles failed the MOT in 2023-24 because of tyre issues—an increase from just over 2 million the year before and continuing a steady rise from 1.83 million in 2019-20.
Worryingly, 36% of these failures—over 750,000 vehicles—had previously received tyre-related advisories, indicating a widespread and risky trend of ignored warnings.
