Drivers cautioned about exceeding the 10% limit

Drivers have been cautioned about a common speed limit myth that could result in fines and penalty points. Motorists who believe they can exceed the speed limit by ten percent without consequences have been warned that this is no longer the case.

For years, drivers have believed they could exceed the speed limit by 10 percent. The widely accepted “10 percent plus 2mph rule” implies this leniency, allowing drivers to travel at 35mph in 30mph zones, for example.

Andrew Jervis, CEO of ClickMechanic, stated: “Speeding costs lives and should never be encouraged, regardless of whether it gets you into trouble or not. Speed limits are not arbitrary numbers; they are carefully set based on factors such as road design, traffic flow, and pedestrian activity.”

“The misconception of a 10 percent leeway could not only result in drivers receiving fines and points on their licenses, but it can also lead to fatal road traffic collisions. As road users, we all have a responsibility to drive considerately to ensure our highways are safe for everyone.”

Although the primatiters of which speed cameras operate have not been planned to be changed. Law enforcement has been advised to be less lenient on people speeding.

Mr. Jervis clarified that the 10 percent myth originated from speed enforcement guidance provided by the Association of Chief Police Officers. “In any case, the 10 percent rule is merely guidance for police forces and not a rule for the public,” Mr. Jervis added.

This rule considered that speed guns used by the police aren’t always 100 percent accurate. The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to your license.
