Don’t Risk It: Give Cyclists 1.5 Metres When Passing
Far too many drivers still don’t realise that when overtaking a cyclist at speeds up to 30mph, they should leave at least 1.5 metres of space – roughly the width of a compact car – and even more at higher speeds. Shockingly, over half of motorists admit they don’t know this.
The consequences? Dangerous close passes, frightened cyclists, near misses… and, all too often, serious injuries or worse. In 2024, cyclists submitted a record number of videos capturing unsafe overtakes – and police are responding. But wouldn’t it be better if it never came to that?
